Staff Surveyor

Job Overview

Assists Project Surveyor/Manager in completing project elements.

Essential Functions of the Job

Serves at the direction and under the supervision of the project professional land surveyor
Provides survey research and data for projects
Utilizes computer drafting and analysis software to assist in projects
Assists in data analysis and calculations, reports, and post processing
Performs field engineering and land surveying
Attends team meetings with project staff and clients and effectively communicates project plans, progress, issues, and concerns
Prepares for and attends public meetings regarding project activity and addresses client and the concerns
Assists in directing and executing project field work and crews

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Good understanding of surveying fundamentals in fields that may include
- Construction/plan layout surveying;
- A&E design surveying;
- Control surveying;
- Computer aided drafting and design (CADD);
- Geomatics; and
- Land Title Surveying principles, computations, and deliverables.
Knowledge of survey standards of practice
Knowledge of local, state, and federal surveying laws and regulations
Knowledge of permitting requirements and skills related to obtaining permits (i.e. LOMA, COSA, Subdivisions)
Familiarity with survey equipment and software
Computer Aided Drafting and Design (CADD) skills
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office software
Communication and writing skills
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with co-workers and clientele in a team-oriented environment
Ability to teach/mentor Survey Technician personnel
Ability to function independently
Capability to conduct public relations activities required for projects which may include client contact, city and county governments, state agencies, federal agencies, and public meetings.

Required Education and Experience

Licensed Survey Intern (L.S.I.)

Physical Demands (if any):
The ability to withstand sustained periods (all day) of being outside and endure Montana’s weather is essential. Must be able to use a sledge hammer and carry heavy equipment such as GPS base station, RV battery, tripods, and equipment and supply bags. Must be able to stand for sustained periods (all day) and have the ability to hike up and down steep grades and climb over fences. Other physical duties include:

Loading and unloading survey equipment and supplies into and out of the back of a truck daily.
Loading, unloading, and operating a four-wheeler or UTV.

Work Environment:
Staff Surveyors can be located either in the Stahly Engineering offices and/or in temporary field offices operating for extended periods of time. Must be prepared for both the office environment and field operations.
